Arts Work Grants at Risk
March 10, 2004
In the proposed budget, funding for the CA Dept of Education (CDE) Arts Work Grants has been zeroed out – a $6 million cut. (Line item 6110-177-0001).
In prior years, CA Department of Education and Superintendent O’Connell in particular have been strong advocates for this program.

- Urge restoration of the Arts Work Visual and Performing Arts Education Program (Line item 6110-177-0001).
- Funded by Proposition 98, the Arts Work Program is currently the only source of state funding for arts education.
- The purpose of the Arts Work Program is to award grants to local educational agencies to develop their capacity to implement high-quality, instructional programs based on the state adopted visual and performing arts content standards for pupils in kindergarten and grades 1 to 12, inclusive.
- Since its inception in 1999, the program has distributed funding to over 32,000 schools, serving over 6 million students and 90,000 teachers.
