Two California Foundations Partner to Provide Arts Education
The Fresno Regional Foundation and the Bonner Family Foundation, have partnered to establish a fund to support arts education in the central San Joaquin Valley. Though specific plans for the fund have yet to be announced, the foundations hope to fill gaps in funding for arts education in area schools and help teachers integrate music, drama, dance, language, arts, and visual arts into the curriculum. The fund also will be used to boost training for elementary school teachers in the valley, most of whom have received little arts education instruction. Building on the funds already contributed by the Bonner Family Foundation, the Fresno Regional Foundation plans to seek additional donors for the project. For full story click here. On Supporting Arts Learning
Sheila Jordan, Superintendent of Alameda County Office of Education, writes in a letter to the editor: “A central pillar of my tenure as superintendent of Alameda County Schools remains the conviction that arts education must be restored as a regular part of the public school curriculum. The California Department of Education recently announced dollar amounts for school districts throughout the state. Of the $105 million [allocated by the state], Alameda County schools will receive more than $3.5 million this year. Thanks to seven years of planning and preparation, we will make dynamic use of the funds immediately to hire arts teachers and provide professional development for generalist teachers so they can teach and integrate the arts with other content areas to deepen and enrich learning.” For more information please click here and here.
