Funding Update
Here’s the latest with regard to the Arts and Music Block Grant for 2007-08:
Funding from the state to school districts is slated for December 2007 (50%) with the "estimation" based upon 2006-2007 school enrollment data. The second installment is scheduled to be delivered in July 2008 (final 50%) with "final determination for funding" based upon 2007-2008 school enrollment data.
A letter from Superintendent Jack O’Connell will accompany the funding, along with the posting of the estimated apportionment list.
The Department of Education is scheduled to release a letter in early November, concerning new aspects of the funding, including clarification of the term “Resolution”, as well as the template for the “Summary Report” due February 2, 2008 to CDE.
If you have further questions, contact the CDE Visual and Performing Arts Consultant, Nancy Carr at (916) 445-5669.

Hewlett Foundation Newsletter Features So. California Elementary School
The story of a young musician at Morrison Elementary School in Norwalk La Mirada is a case study on the promise of arts education. California Alliance for Arts Education Policy Director Joe Landon says, “What drew me to Morrison was their commitment to the arts as core curriculum. They understand that through the arts they are empowering their kids to be successful learners and citizens. It requires a real stand on the part of [Principal] Guerrero to commit the time, funds, and resources for professional development to make it happen.” To view the full text of the article, click here.

John Edwards Talks About Arts Education on MTV
At the University of New Hampshire during the first MTV/MySpace Presidential Dialogue, Edwards talked about the gap between scholarship and funding for athletic programs and the lack of funding for the arts by pointedly saying that when people look back on past civilizations, it is the arts that they remember — which is why it's important to fund them on every level, from kindergarten to college. His idea was to ask for specific funding from Congress to promote the arts in schools. To read the dialogue or watch video clips, click here. (Source: Americans for the Arts)
