California News
New Alliance Advocacy Efforts
The economic forecast for the coming year in California appears daunting, with estimates of the state budget deficit ranging between 6 and 8 billion dollars. Within such a challenging budget climate, there may be increased pressure to reduce funding for critical statewide programs including education. During the coming year, the Alliance will continue to focus its efforts on securing ongoing funding for arts education.
To that end, in the coming year the Alliance intends to introduce two new advocacy efforts, one a pilot program aimed at building and expanding the base of local support for arts education; the other a statewide partnership with the California State PTA, with the goal of communicating with every state legislator about support within their district for arts education. These efforts reflect the Alliance’s commitment to work “top-down, bottom-up” in building statewide support for arts education.
We’ll be letting you know more as this work unfolds in the coming year. For more information contact CAAE Policy Director Joe Landon at joe@artsed411.org
School Board Elections in Los Angeles Include the Arts
Arts for LA conducted a survey of over 100 school board candidates about their awareness and support of arts education. Candidates running in 21 of the 29 Arts for All districts were invited to participate in the six-question survey.
The objective of the survey is to inform candidates as well as local stakeholders about the importance of arts education, its role in preparing students to participate in a 21st century workforce as well as local, county and state resources that are available to school districts throughout the region. Arts Education and NCLB Reauthorization
The Arts Education Working Group, a coalition of arts and arts education advocacy groups co-chaired by Americans for the Arts, has released a number of legislative recommendations for strengthening the role of the arts in the reauthorization of the No Child Left Behind Act. These legislative proposals are based on the unified statement "Arts Education: Creating Student Success in School, Work, and Life," which was signed by more than 60 national education and arts education organizations. These recommendations are very timely as the House Education and Labor Committee held a hearing on Monday, September 10, 2007, on preliminary legislative language, and the Senate is about to formally consider legislation. Americans for the Arts is working to include the group's recommendations into the House and Senate draft bills, in addition to analyzing additional new proposals. (Source: Arts Action News)

Teacher's Songs Help Second-Graders Learn Math
Second-grade teacher Eric Chandler writes his own songs inspired by the Virginia Standards of Learning to help his students learn about math, vowel sounds and other concepts, and he's not alone: Some 200 artists have contributed music about reading, math, foreign languages, special education and classroom management to a Michigan-based Web site, www.songsforteaching.com, that offers music for core subjects, foreign languages, special education and classroom management.
