The elementary and middle schools in the Morgan Hill Unified School District are ecstatic about receiving a $1,000,000 Visual and Performing Arts (VAPA) Grant. It is a goal of our district to provide equitable access to the arts. MHUSD adopted an Equity Arts Resolution in 2016, specifically dedicating money toward the visual and performing arts in our Local Control and Accountability Plan (LCAP). A VAPA committee comprised of teachers and administrators was established. Shortly thereafter in 2017, we began research on a Strategic Arts Education Plan, which exposed not only the ways schools integrated the arts into their daily curriculum but who was accessing those opportunities. When the Student Support and Academic Enrichment (SSAE) Grant was announced, it was a fitting opportunity to further the saturation of the arts in our schools.

It was important for us to develop a sustainable program, so rather than utilize the funds only for supplies, we are also spending it on professional development. It’s an integral part of our plan to develop the expertise of our teaching staff in the arts and explore new ways they can integrate dance, media arts, music, theater, and visual arts into their core curriculum.
